Research Brief: Satellites, AI could help farmers detect soybean aphid infestations

Satellite-based remote sensing allows us to see much more than we can see when standing on the ground. New research from the University of Minnesota found, when combined with artificial intelligence, remote sensing could dramatically improve management of soybean aphid, an invasive pest that negatively impacts soybean yield and quality.

With family and friends in attendance, Troy Fink was promoted to Colonel in a ceremony at Fort Ripley in late October. Fink, who has served his country for the past 36 years, is now in charge of all operations at Fort Ripley and Arden Hills Training Center as Garrison Commander, which he was appointed to last June.

Dawson Postmaster Cathy Harstad presented Jim Pehrson with a special jacket for his one million miles of safe driving on his delivery route. Jim started with the Dawson Postal Service Jan. 21, 1984, as a Rural Carrier Associate (RCA). Gordon Powers was the postmaster at that time. Then, Jim became a regular carrier in August of 1995.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued more than $1.77 billion this year to agricultural producers and landowners through its Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), a critical piece of the Department’s efforts to support climate-smart agriculture and forestry on working lands.

DNR warns of rapidly changing ice conditions, especially in backyard ponds, smaller bodies of water

Unseasonably warm weather, combined with a lack of snow cover, has taken a toll on the ice on some water bodies, particularly small ponds and drainage ditches often found in neighborhoods. These smaller, nearby water bodies can be magnets for curious children.

Lake Benton Valley Journal - On Sunday, Dec. 17, the Tyler Area Arts Council presented Joslynn Rose of Lake Benton. The 2023 contestant on “The Voice” headlined her own holiday concert. In addition of hearing many favorite holiday songs, the event included an ugly sweater contest.
