Dale Clemens Schoberg was born in New Ulm, Minn., on Sept. 20, 1941, to Clemens and Edna (Otto) Schoberg. He was welcomed home by sister, Shirley Mae. Dale was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Bernadotte Lutheran Church.
During high school, Dale was a member of 4-H and FFA and spoke avidly of his experiences. Dale graduated from Gaylord High School in 1959. After high school, he continued helping his parents on the farm, worked at the Gaylord school’s bus garage, was a school bus driver, and worked at the Sibley County garage.
Feb. 8, 1964, Dale was united in marriage to Barbara Hanson at the Cleveland Church of Christ and together they have shared over 60 years. They were blessed with two children, Scott and Traci.
In late 1965, Dale enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed at Imperial Beach, Calif., and served on the USS Ranger aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War. After Dale was honorably discharged in 1969, he moved the family to Brookings, S.D., where he attended SDSU and obtained his bachelor’s degree in Ag Education.
In 1973, Dale accepted a position teaching Production Ag/Ag Business at Canby Area Vocational Technical College where he remained for 22 years. Dale loved his students and spoke often of all the “good” times they had on building trades projects and helping on our farm. Dale was “over-the-moon” when students would visit.
After teaching, Dale became an Ag Loan Officer at the State Bank of Taunton for seven years. Next, Dale drove a motor coach for Southwest Tour and Travel of Marshall, Minn. Dale was trying to fulfill his dream of being a tour guide but learned quickly he was just the bus driver. He fell in love with transporting college and high school sports teams from across the nation. It wasn’t glamorous working hours but Dale loved it, and he would tell you it was the best job he had.
Dale served on the Yellow Medicine County Fair Board for over 20 years and was proud of his children for being 4-H members. Dale was baptized in 1964 becoming an active member of Antelope Hills Christian Church. He helped wherever needed. A true servant.
When Dale wasn’t busy working, he loved to spend time with his grandchildren. He would pick up Heath and Tyler, take them to the bakery or Dairy Queen, and get their help mowing or with other projects. Dale definitely didn’t miss any sporting events. Tyler knew he could get Grandpa and Grandma to take him to any sporting event no matter the location. He even convinced them to attend the State Boys Basketball tournament which became a fun outing for several years before health issues overtook Dale’s life.
On Sept. 1, 2024, Dale took a bad fall on the cement driveway. After his hospital stay, he was admitted to the nursing home for rehab and healing where he remained through his final days.
Dale is survived by his wife, Barb; son, Scott (Angie) Schoberg; daughter, Traci (Jim Jaenisch) Sayre; grandchildren, Sharayah (Cody) Isaacson, Caleb Schoberg, Josh (Carla) Schoberg, Heath Sayre, Tyler (Abby Theisen) Sayre; great-granddaughters, Junia and Willow Isaacson; sister-in-law, Barb Ann Hanson and children; brother-in-law, Jerry Kewatt and children; longtime family friends, Jim and Carol Young; his Ag students, AHCC family, and last but not least “The Table of Knowledge” coffee friends.
