Steve Benson

Steven D. Benson, age 69, of Canby, Minn., passed away on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022, at home in Canby. Funeral service took place on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2022, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Canby, Minn., with Pastor Levi Bollerud officiating. Burial will be held at a later date. Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.

Steven D. Benson was born on Dec. 1, 1953, in Canby, Minn., to parents Duane H. Benson and Elizabeth (Oellien) Benson. Steve lived on the farm until his dad retired from farming, and they moved to town in 1962.

Steve attended Canby Public Schools and graduated in 1972. After high school, Steve attended Pipestone Vocational School where he took architectural construction. However, after a few short weeks, Steve quit school and started working for Marvin and Terry Lundquist.

Steve also worked for Grong Lumber and Al and Craig Peterson until Steve and Bill Fairchild started their own carpentry business and worked together. Terry Lundquist joined them for a few years. After Bill retired, Steve and Terry continued to work together as Benson and Lundquist until Terry retired. Steve worked by himself until his death. Steve’s granddaughter, Ryah worked with him during the summers. Steve had no plans to retire as he said he loved what he was doing.

Steve loved all of his clients and enjoyed all of the projects he worked on. He also loved to get to know each and everyone. Steve loved a good joke, both telling them and pulling them. Steve had the gift of gab; he loved visiting with anyone; he would be quiet until you got to know him, but after that he would talk for hours. Steve loved the weekly card games and whatever other shenanigans came up with his friends. Steve loved gardening and working on wood projects. Steve loved going to Menards; many date nights started out with a trip there. Steve was a lifetime member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Canby.

Steve loved his family. Steve was married to Dee Benson on August 20, 1994. With this marriage, he gained two daughters whom he was so proud of. He adored his grandchildren and loved attending as many of their events as he could. He wouldn’t always show how much he enjoyed them, but hearing him tell his friends about their events made him shine. Steve had a standing date at the Bakery every Friday morning with some of the grandkids, and he was always up for a game of cards (3-13 was his favorite).

Steve is survived by his wife, Dee; children, Thalia (Corey) Rothrock of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Beth Beiningen (Willem Deklerk) of Canby, Minn.; grandchildren, Ryah Beiningen, Riece Sanow, Reghan Sanow, Beckett, Broderick and Elyce Rothrock; sisters, Sue Ann (Arvin) Rustman and Gloria Jean (Greg Nygaard) both of Lake Crystal, Minn.; niece and nephews, Ashley (Gavin) Hellekson, Michael (Summer) Allen, Randy (Angie) Rustman and Ricky (Jen) Rustman; and great nieces and nephews.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Duane and Elizabeth.
