Last week’s trivia question was about possible airmail service in Canby in 1920. Remember, the Wright Brothers first flight was in 1903. World War One was the first war that had airplanes as part of the fighting arsenal that ended in 1918. Now airmail in Canby in 1920? Well, not quite, but the thought was there. Tyler Goplen, the son of Gary and Kari Goplen and a 2019 graduate of Canby High School, was recently named overall grand champion at the 96th Litte International at North Dakota State University. Goplen is a junior at NDSU and is majoring in agricultural economics.

The answer to last week’s trivia question about the location of the water tower for the railroad and what was it used for is as follows: Steam locomotives needed a water supply and a fuel supply that was mostly coal to operate.

Canby resident Jason Day was born with complete transposition of the great arteries in 1971, Day is no stranger to invasive surgeries and medical treatment. Day was born a “blue baby,” meaning he had a blue complexion at birth from lack of oxygen in the blood.

We all know the harmful side effects of smoking cigarettes, but the second leading cause of lung cancer is not as well known —  radon.  

Ingredients: 1/4 tsp. cloves 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 1/4 tsp. salt 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1 cup sugar 4 cups flour 1 cup buttermilk 3 eggs (well beaten)

Directions: Add baking powder and baking soda to buttermilk. Mix all ingredients together. Deep fat fry at 375 degrees until lightly brown.
