I will continue with the stories from James Tholkes whose dad, Matt, ran the general store out of St. Leo for many years. Information in this article is from the book “The Legacy of the Tholkes Family” written by James Tholkes in 2022.

 In their first year exhibiting at the MN State Fair, Jacob Sterzinger and Merrill B217 "Petunia" (above) were awarded Reserve Grand Champion Hampshire Registered Yearling Ewe and Lucas Sterzinger and SS W035 "Ellie" were named Champion Black Face Commercial Ewe Lamb.

Minnesota DNR to offer free entrance to state parks, recreation areas on Saturday, Sept. 9

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is waiving vehicle permit fees at all 75 state parks and recreation areas on Sat., Sept. 9. This “Free Park Day” is one of four days each year on which the Minnesota DNR waives the requirement for a vehicle permit at state parks and recreation areas.

Rotary of Canby

Canby-Minneota cross country joined the Rotary of Canby meeting on Aug. 31, sharing information on the current team, how points are scored during the races, and the great returning, and new, talent that can be seen in the 60 C/M runners.

Looking Back

From August 1973 - Five young ladies had a ball tossing rings over bottles at the Taunton dinner and bazaar held a week ago Sunday. They were just a few of the many hundreds who visited the event despite the hot weather. 

Canby Area Arts Council

Harvest is in full swing. Football players are headed to morning practice and the good foods from gardens in the neighborhood are being shared. It’s time to review the summer and celebrate the arts in our community. Our five Music on Mondays events were well attended and the return of meal options was appreciated.

Cilantro, Black Bean, and Corn Salsa

Ingredients:

2 (15 ounce) cans black beans, drained and rinsed

1 (15 ounce) can yellow corn, drained

1 (15 ounce) can white corn, drained

1 (14.5 ounce) can Italian-style diced tomatoes, drained

Named after the sandy knoll the wheat is planted on, Sandhill Mill and owners Peter and Brittany Haugen are bringing a healthier flour option to the citizens of Canby.

Prairie Lives

Ron Jensen was born June 16, 1948 in Tyler, Minnesota to Einer and Elva (James) Jensen. Ron was the third of four Jensen children with older siblings, Dale and Bonnie, and younger brother, Wade.

Both sides of Ron’s family emigrated from Denmark. He recalled conversations with his Grandma Jensen, who lived to 103.
