Luke Russell, Director of International Ministries for Hope Haven, told about the Hope Haven wheelchair program that has provided over 140,000 wheelchairs since 1994 at the May 16 meeting of the Rotary Club of Canby. Hope Haven makes it possible for people in other countries to gain access to wheelchairs, walkers, canes and braces.
I loved the choose your own adventure books when I was growing up. You would read part of a chapter and then you’d have to make a decision, each of which would send you to a different page in the book.
Memorial Day is coming up this weekend. It is not just a three-day weekend. It is a day to remember our veterans, especially those who have given their life for our country. So, this week I will highlight three that died in World War II.
Canby Public Library will be closed Monday, May 29, for Memorial Day.

A free composting class will be held on Monday, June 12, at 4 p.m. at the Canby Public Library. This program will be presented by Stephanie DeJaeghere of the Lyon County Environmental Department.
Many people joined in for the 2022 Relay for Life event.
The 30th Annual Relay for Life Event will be held in Smith Park in Montevideo on Friday, June 9, from 5 to 11 p.m. The Opening Ceremony and Survivor Walk will take place at 6:15 p.m. Caregiver Walk will be approximately 8:10 (before luminary lighting).

Josh Brunning told of his plans for the historic “pink” bank building on the corner of Hwy 75 and 2nd Street at the May 11 meeting of the Rotary Club of Canby. He showed a sample of the copper colored shingle that will be used to restore the cupola and spoke of the many community volunteers helping with the restoration.
In 1898, Mr. B. O. Crandall was the publisher of the Canby News and also the Porter Weekly Press. How many people are there that remember a newspaper from Porter? I talked to someone this winter that said they had seen a paper from Porter in some relative’s property.
