New life to an old home

Barb (Blaine) Vanstrom’s family home was built in 1925 by her grandparents William and Anna Blaine. Vanstrom herself was born in the house in 1944 to parents Vernan and Erdine Blaine. On Feb. 12 the house was lifted, and two days later, on a snowy Valentine’s Day, moved to its new location in Gary, S.D.

Ask a Trooper

I am sorry to hear about your situation. This is not my area of expertise but the Minnesota State Patrol is part of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS), which includes the Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) division.

I reached out to someone there, and they provided the following information:

Looking Back

Roger and Robert Boulton received a trophy and plaque for having the highest indexing pen of Chester Whites ever tested at New Ulm. Roger and Mark are pictured above with Larry Dunn, Swine Management coordinator at Canby VoTech, after receiving the trophies.

Ask a Trooper

Question: Hello, I thought I read somewhere that rest areas help reduce crashes. I saw a trooper at a rest area the other day, and it got me thinking about that. Can you write about that?

Answer: More than 20 million travelers stop at Minnesota rest areas annually.

WRAPS

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching it is important to discuss what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like. Oftentimes, things that may initially be seen as “cute” or “romantic” can lead to unhealthy behaviors in relationships.

Prairie Lives

We have been learning about Marshall’s Doug Hamilton, who was married to Chari when he received his draft notice in November 1968, the day before Chari gave birth to their daughter, Becky. Chari and Becky lived in Willmar during Doug’s Vietnam service.

Area History

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and the start of the six weeks of Lent that lead up to Holy Week culminating with Easter Sunday which is March 31 this year. I found an article that I would like to share with everyone from the April 25, 1924, Canby News that was important then just as much as it is today, one hundred years later.

The Library Nook

The winter reading program runs now through March 30. Stop by the library to sign up. Read six books to receive a prize!

Coming Thursday, Feb. 15, Kids BINGO from 3:30 to 4:30 in the community center at city hall.

The Library will be closed, Monday, Feb 19, for Presidents’ Day.

Live Well • Age Wisely

Last time, I wrote about two books available at no cost to residents in Prairie Five’s service area: “Walk With Ease” and “Creating Moments of Joy Along the Alzheimer’s Journey”. I often hear people say, “Oh, there’s probably someone who could use this more than me,” but they aren’t doing anyone any good sitting on a shelf!
