Avis Kruger

Avis Kruger, age 94, of Canby, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral service were held Monday, Sept. 22, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary, South Dakota, with a visitation Sunday, Sept. 21, at the Houseman Funeral Home-Birk Chapel in Canby. Burial was at the Augusta Cemetery in Marietta, Minnesota. Houseman Funeral Home-Birk Chapel was entrusted with arrangements.
Avis Arlene Kruger was born on October 16, 1930, in Altamont, South Dakota, to Leslie and Erna (Walter) Tribitt. She attended country school to the eighth grade.
Avis was united in marriage to Vern William Kruger at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Dec. 31, 1950, while Vern was in the United States Army. To this union they were blessed with two daughters, Joan and Karen. Together they farmed for 30 years until Vern’s unexpected death on July 13, 1981. After Vern’s death, Avis moved into Canby that fall. She then worked as a cook at Community Health Services in Canby for several years.
She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, playing cards, doing word finds and watching the Game Show Network. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary. Avis passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025, at the age of 94 years, 11 months and 1 day at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Grateful for having shared Avis’ life are her two daughters, Joan (Raymond) Sorenson of Marshall, Minnesota and Karen (Darold) Hansen of Canby; her three grandchildren, Shelley (Greg) Vannett of Savage, Minnesota, Derrick (Kari) Hacker of Canby and Nathan (Jess) Hacker of Canby; and seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her siblings, Albert (Twylla) Tribitt and Deloris (Leon) Bekaert.
