Robert Swenson
Robert Ludwig Swenson, age 87, of Burleson, Texas, passed away at his home on Friday evening March 7, 2025. Robert was born September 27, 1937, in Canby, Minn., to Ludwig and Mabel (Johnson) Swenson.
Robert attended a one-room country school in Oshkosh Township, and then went to Canby High School graduating in June 1955. He married his high school sweetheart, Dorene Mae Jants (daughter of Alfred and Mildred Jants), of Canby on December 21, 1958. Robert attended South Dakota State University, Brookings, S.D., for agriculture and graduated in June 1959.
Robert was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. He served 27 years of distinguished service in the Army and received several medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross. He served two tours in Vietnam where he said, “By the grace of God, I made it home.” Robert retired as Lieutenant Colonel in November 1986.
After retiring from the Army, he went into restaurant management and later worked for Walmart before retiring completely in 2009.
Funeral services for Robert will be held on Monday, March 31, 2025, at Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Arlington, Texas, with interment following at the DFW National Cemetery.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Dorene; brothers, Leonard (Janet) and Maynard (Mabel Ann) Swenson both of Canby; sons, Brad (Debbie) of Burleson, Texas, Robert Jr. (Beccy) of Lohn, Texas, and Barry (Mary Kay) of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren, Heather, Caitlin, Eric, Derrick, Tanya, Ashlee, Kyla, Valerie, Jonathan, Paul, and Christopher; and several great-grandchildren.
