Ellen Van Erdewyk

Ellen Van Erdewyk, age 85, of Hendricks, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at the Hendricks Community Hospital. Memorial service will be on Friday, May 16, at 5 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks with Pastor Dayna Weltzin officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.  Inurnment will be at the Hendricks City Cemetery.  Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel of Hendricks  is entrusted with the arrangements.
Ellen Marie (Hoseck) Van Erdewyk was born on January 26, 1940, the youngest child of Joseph and Jessie Evelyn (Melby) Hoseck. She was raised in the rural Canby/Hendricks area. Ellen attended country school until the seventh grade and then graduated from Canby High School in 1957. She went on to attend Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota, where she earned her teaching certificate. Ellen began her career teaching in a country school and later in a public school until 1972.
She was united in marriage to Vernard Van Erdewyk on December 7, 1962. They began their family near Brandt, South Dakota. In 1973, the family moved to Lake Crystal, Minnesota, where Ellen became a stay-at-home mom. In 1983, she began working at various local restaurants, where she honed her passion for cooking. In 1990, she and Vernard purchased a restaurant in Amboy, Minnesota, in 1990. Mick’s Place became her second home where she excelled at cooking and shared her passion with others until 1999. 
The couple then moved back to Hendricks, with the intention of retiring. After returning to Hendricks, Ellen continued working at the local bar and restaurant, as well as the Hendricks Senior Center for Lutheran Social Services through the Meals on Wheels program, until October 2024.
Ellen and Vernard were blessed with six children: Karen Gronewald of Worthington, Minnesota, Keith Van Erdewyk of Amboy, Minnesota, Kathy (Brian) Severns of Good Thunder, Minnesota, Karri Schuler of Taunton, Minnesota, and Korey (Kate) Van Erdewyk. She was a proud grandmother to Mike (Ann) Gronewald and Rex (Breanna) Hammerschmidt, parents of Zoe and Max; Jacob (Annie) Van Erdewyk, parents of Spencer; Nicolas (Samantha) Van Erdewyk, parents of Brantley, Oliver, and Leon; Victoria Mell Van Erdewyk; Abigail Mell Van Erdewyk; Brandon (Cassie) Severns, parents of Odin; Emma (Evan) Trettel; Dillon and Lane Van Erdewyk; and Conner and Ella Van Erdewyk.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Vernard; their infant son, Kevin; her parents; her siblings; and many close friends.
