Frederick “Freddie” John Gottskalkson was born on November 16, 1936, on the family farm in rural Porter to Jack and Eleanor (O’Connor) Gottskalkson. He grew up attending country school in Alta Vista Township until he completed the eighth grade. Freddie continued to work on the family farm until he enlisted into the United States Air Force.
While he was stationed in Salina, Kan., he met and fell in love with Marlene Schlesener. The couple was married on May 10, 1959, in Hope, Kan. Shortly after their marriage, the couple returned to the rural Taunton, Porter area until establishing their family farm outside of Porter.
Freddie was a farmer, a sheep shearer, and worked for McLaughlin Schultz for over 50 years. He was an avid card player and enjoyed country music. Fred’s friends and family were important to him. Fred also enjoyed sharing meals with his family… especially dessert.
