He was raised in Fortier Township near Canby and attended District No. 48 Country School through the eighth grade. He then attended Canby High School, graduating in 1962. Following his education, he worked at Great Plains from 1963 to 1967 and helped on his home farm in Fortier Township. John was united in marriage to Lucille Svoboda in 1965. Together they raised three children, Brenda, Robert and Richard. In 1989, he bought a quarter of land in Norman Township, where he farmed and raised cattle and hogs. John continued to farm until 2024 when he moved to Canby.

He loved to go to Gary Legion and the Showboat to kick up his heels on Saturday nights. He enjoyed playing cards, and in later years his enjoyment was driving around Canby, going out to eat and keeping up on the news.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Lilly; brothers: Ralph and Lester; sister, Lois Hanson; and sister-in-law, Linda Reyerson.
