John Thelen

John “Boysie” Richard Thelen, passed away peacefully at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Jan. 27, 2025, at the age of 78. 
Born on May 17, 1946, in Albany, Minn., John grew up playing sports and working at the family’s Albany Roller Mill. He led an extraordinary life, pursuing many careers. His work ethic and commitment to helping others were hallmarks of his character.
John’s athletic accomplishments were equally impressive. As a standout fullback at St. Cloud State University, he left an indelible mark on the field. In 1998, his contributions to sports were celebrated with his induction into the Albany High School Hall of Fame. As John grew older, he enjoyed coaching his children’s sports, playing competitive softball, and spending many hours on the golf course.
John served his country with honor as a member of the U.S. Army stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany, from 1969-1972, embodying the values of courage and selflessness.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Marlene of Sioux Falls; his son, Paul Thelen (Carrie) of Minnetrista, Minn., along with their children, Gavin and Lexi; his daughter, Kirstie Rients (Kelly) of Brandon, S.D., along with children, Brianna, Bailee, and Grace; one great-grandchild, Guineviere; and his sisters, Barbara Tupper and Susie Schiffler. John also cherished the family’s many grand dogs, who brought him immense joy.
He was preceded in death by his son, Baby Paul John; his parents, John “JB” and Barbara; his siblings, Lorraine, Richard “Dick”, Mary Alice, Jeanette, James “Jim”, and David; and his beloved 14-year-old therapy dog, Drew.
A private memorial service will take place in Albany at Seven Dolors Cemetery at a later date. The family has requested memorial contributions be made to Disabled American Veterans (DAV), /www.dav.org/ways-to-give/
John “Boysie” Thelen will be remembered for his love, strength, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends. He touched the lives of many and will be dearly missed.
