Patrick (Pat) McLain, age 77, of rural Canby, Minn., passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Canby. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby from 12:45-1:45 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a procession to the church for Mass at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Grandview Cemetery in Gary, S.D. Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Patrick Joseph McLain was born on March 9, 1949, to Joseph and Zita (DeRider) McLain of Canby. He attended Catholic school at St. Peter’s Church and then graduated from Canby High School.
He married Rose Volk in 1969. The couple had five children and lived in Gary. He married JoAnne Brisk in 1984.
In his younger years, Pat dabbled in rodeo, which he attended throughout life. Pat’s favorite occupation was working with horses, hauling them and cattle for area ranchers and farmers.
Pat liked country music, documentary shows, and rural scenery. He enjoyed going for coffee with his friends daily, going to sale barns weekly, and antiquing with JoAnne.
He is survived by his partner, JoAnne; children: Gregory McLain, Pamela (Randy Miller) McLain, John McLain, Jodi (John) McLain Richards, Jessica (Ryan) Brassell, and Lane Smith McLain; grandchildren: Adalyn McLain, Sawyer Miller, Josephine Richards, Julian Daugherty, and Ragnar Brassell; brothers: Thomas, Michael (Brenda), James (Barb), and Richard; sister: Mary Jo (Edward) Phillips; aunt: Margaret Moore; and many cousins, nephews, nieces, other loved ones, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Zita; sisters-in-law, Patty and Rita; and nephew Alan McLain.
